Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) expressed its deep concern over the pelting of stones and attempts to damage the properties of Eenadu Daily on Thursday, 20th August, by the workers of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) at several places in the state including Hyderabad. At some places, the PRP men burnt the copies of the daily.
The President D Somasundar and General Secretary Y Narender Reddy said that while the Union recognized their legitimate right to protest in peaceful manner over any news story, which they perceive to be against their party and devoid of truth, the pelting of stones, attempts to vandalize the Newspaper Offices and burning of copies of the newspapers was undemocratic and unacceptable. Even the Supreme Court observed that burning of copies a newspaper amounted to attack on the freedom of the press. It was an attack on the democratic right of freedom of expression and the press, guaranteed in the Constitution of India, they said.
Somasundar and Narender Reddy urged upon the President of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) Mr. Chiranjeevi and other leaders to restrain their cadres and workers from indulging in vandalism, pelting of stones on Eenadu Offices and burning the copies of the newspaper in the state. They said it was undemocratic to try to intimidate the newspapers and journalists and warned that such attempts would be resisted with all their might.
